Alexander Mackenzie (explorer)
Sir Alexander Mackenzie ( – 12 March 1820) was a Scottish explorer and fur trader known for accomplishing the first crossing of North America north of Mexico by a European in 1793. The Mackenzie River and Mount Sir Alexander are named after him. As a leading member of the North West Company, he aspired to extend the Company's operations into western Canada and selling those furs in China. His hopes thus were intrusions on the monopoly positions of both the Hudson's Bay Company and the East India Company. Early life Mackenzie was born in Stornoway in Isle of Lewis, Lewis. He was the third of the four children born to Kenneth 'Corc' Mackenzie (1731–1780) and his wife Isabella MacIver, from another prominent mercantile family in Stornoway. Alexander Cecil Knox Mackenzie (7 August 1870 – 11 April 1947) was an Australian cricketer. He played 48 first-class cricket, first-class matches for New South Wales cricket team, New South Wales and Rest of Australia cricket team, Rest of Australia between seasons 1888/89 and 1906/07. In the Sydney grade competition he is most well known for having played for the Paddington Cricket Club, Paddington and Eastern Suburbs Cricket Club, Waverley clubs. Alexander David Gregor MacKenzie (born 9 July 1956 in Inverness) is a former Scotland international rugby union player. His regular playing position was Prop. Rugby Union career Amateur career He first went to Blairmore School at Glass near Huntly. A small primary school, it also produced former Scotland captain David Sole. MacKenzie was later educated at Strathallan School in Perthshire. In his younger days, he played at hooker and then flanker but the master at Strathallan converted him to Prop at the age of 16 and that position stuck. He played for Highland. Highland lost the player to New Zealand in 1977 when Mackenzie went to study agriculture at Lincoln College in Lincoln Town. Alexander John Mackenzie (born 29 August 1941) is a former Australian politician. He was a member of the House of Representatives from 1975 to 1983, representing the New South Wales seat of Calare for the National Party. He was principal of an agricultural college before entering parliament and later became involved with conservationist organisations. Early life Mackenzie was born in Melbourne on 29 August 1941. His father was killed in World War II while fighting on the New Guinea campaign and he was raised on his grandfather's farm near Seymour, Victoria. Mackenzie attended Geelong Grammar School. Alexander Mackenzie (9 April 1923 – 18 September 2002) was a British abstract artist, an active member of the Penwith Art Society and Newlyn Art Gallery and educator. Alexander Augustin Donald MacKenzie (19 February 1876 – 1 July 1969) was Provost of St Andrew's Cathedral, Inverness from 1918 to 1949. Mackenzie studied theology at Durham University on a scholarship, and was a member of Hatfield College there. As a student he was active in Durham University Boat Club, serving as both Secretary and President by 1903. He also became Senior Man of Hatfield and President of the Durham Union for the Epiphany term of 1903. Mackenzie was ordained in 1905. Alexander Mackenzie (January 28, 1822 – April 17, 1892) was a Canadian politician who served as the second prime minister of Canada, in office from 1873 to 1878. Mackenzie was born in Logierait, Perthshire, Scotland. He left school at the age of 13, following his father's death, to help his widowed mother, and trained as a stonemason. Sir Alexander Campbell Mackenzie KCVO (22 August 1847 – 28 April 1935) was a Scottish composer, conductor and teacher best known for his oratorios, violin and piano pieces, Scottish folk music and works for the stage. Mackenzie was a member of a musical family and was sent for his musical education to Germany. He had many successes as a composer, producing over 90 compositions, but from 1888 to 1924, he devoted a great part of his energies to running the Royal Academy of Music.
